If you grew up around rock, thus typically not liking rap......it could have easily been switched.
When are people going to learn about branching out and trying new things. Its one thing to get more enjoyment out of one type of music compared to others........its another thing to say things like....rap sucks cuz it only talks about getting rich/laid/and wearing crappy clothes.
I hate to disappoint all the uninformed people out there, but music has transcended through time talking about the same kinds of things. Music has been something for everyone to get away from the normalcy of life.
Lets look at how ROCKERS over the years have dressed completely different from the "normal" lifestyle........so do RAPPERS.....but so do almost ever other musicians. Lets look at how ROCKERS talk about getting sex/drinking/death/lifelosses.....OH WAIT so do RAPPERS and everyelse else.
I could easily list more.
DO YOU SEE the correlations???? Music typically is the same things throughout genres, but is only expressed differently through words/looks/and beats. Music is not only an out for the fans, but for the artists too.
Its completely okay to enjoy one genre over another genre. But to call out one genre for the "same things" as what your fav genre talks about......is NAIVE!
After my rant.....i prefer rap over rock. Its just whats mainly on my ipod and whats makes me feel good. BUT the fact is.....i like all music. I listen to Hip Hop, Reggae, Dancehall, Dance, Techno, Trance, Rock, Country, Blues, Swing, Alternative, Old Rock, Jazz, and the list goes on.
Be more informed Not just about what you like, but about what you dont like before you make an uneducated post about........I dont like that cuz ...like ..gosh...like zomg.....its not what my friends listen to...like gee...skate or die...like ...its weird... oh ffs

AND swoosh people go right over the post that uses common sense.

I'm generally a rock & Metal kind of guy, but lately I've been listening to Daft Punk... It feels like I'm cheating on my musical taste.

Nah man, you're open minded. You're like an oasis in this god awful wasteland. Ah what was that converse ads music call? Y'know the one with Jules Casablancas, NERD and the other one, that's a pretty great mix of 3 kinds of music.

I've seen this view to be quite common among people that like metal and rock. I find it bizarre that some people have this idea of liking one genre(EDM) without liking the other or other way around.
But daft punk are great! I saw them live in Australia and it was the best. It was more like a concert rather than an dance party, but dancing still went on and was fun.

Rock, by a huge margin. A great number of rock music groups are have attended university and actualy know what they are doing. A great many rock pieces have components from the masters as a base.

Rap is easy, fun for some but as a rule requires little real musical talent. I'm sure there are some rappers who do know what they are doing but most don't.

Used to play base in a rock group and was amazed by what some people were capable of. After attending a symphont concert I was totaly blown away. These people were all incredible!!!

I'd like to see the statistics you used to base your statement about a "great" number of rock groups actually attended unversities. Wait, I'm going to take a stab and just assume you really dont have any stats on this....thus you are making an assumption which could very easily be jaded and wrong.
I'd also like to see you put together a hip hop song. You need to be able brand a beat/write the 8 beat base/use the up beat and down beat in a fresh signature way/write a connecting "chorus" hook/smash out some lyrics that flow/hammer out the arrangent/meld the hook with the arrangement and most importantly hit the studio for days sometimes weeks to put your lyrics to the music.
On top of that.......this might have to be a hit. Theres money involved..people to pay...bills to pay...deadlines to meet. On top of all that.....you need to be able to perform this hit infront of thousands and thousands of people. Did i forget you still have to be in tune...you still have to be able to sound good. Rap is easy??
Now, whenever you have completed your assignment. Then, just maybe, your rapping requires little musical talent statement can hold some water.
In an interesting twist you kind of contradict yourself, by saying most rappers dont know what they are doing. The way I look at it, you are also admitting alot of rockers dont either.
This all goes back to my original post in this thread. What happens in one genre, happens in all genres. Lets finish by talking about REALISTIC "mosts."
Most rock groups dont even make it. For every rock group that makes it big, there are countless of others that dont. For every rapper that makes it big, there are countless of others that dont. For every country artist that makes it big, there are countless of others that dont. So forth and so on.
Does this mean that they arent talented? By no means. It just means that most of the executive players dont see the ones that "wont" make it...as money makers. You CANT generalize one genre over others and say something is EASY. You have to rate each talent on their talents.
People confuse what "great music" is...compared to what "music" makes them feel good. THE FIRST IS AN OPINION.....THE SECOND IS A FACT. Make sure you know the difference. "Great music" is in the eyes of the beholder.
Once again its ok to get more enjoyment out of one genre over another, but to make statements that one genre is easy.....IS NAIVE.

death metal >>>> all other metal >>>>>>>>> rock >>> all other music >> rap
note the number of arrows roughly shows how much greater the genre is
